Datsun Fairlady Z – MR-03

Datsun Fairlady Z – MR-03

All, Kyosho Mini-Z
A true revelation when it hit the shelves, MR-03 platform finally allowed my dream car body (1972 Skyline GT-R) to become a competitive racer due to its low center of gravity and slim chassis profile that allowed the Skyline to even fit onto it. Later on, when Kyosho's upgrade parts branch Route246 released the "Devil Z" it became my go-to body and somehow managed to survive about half a season of racing in one piece (including the first indestructible mirrors!). This chassis received tons of deserved love including 3Racing alloy front tower bar, Atomic 90mm Mid-Mount and damper disk system, 3Racing knuckles, and Reflex Racing low-profile front suspension that impresses me even today. This car performed like a champ despite my lack of appropriate driving technique behind the remote and…

Ford GT – MR-02

All, Kyosho Mini-Z
This was my very first chassis/electronics set and it migrated a good few chassis from its original MR-015 to end up as this MR-02. Faithfully raced a whole season with my blue Lotus Europa Special body and seen quite a few other shells on its back over the years. Ford GT was a gift from owners of Freaks Garage hobby shop and track in Chiba, Japan, and posed only a tiny challenge of forsaking the damper disk system for the motor mount due to this body's extremely low clearance. Other than that, this racer got standard set of upgrades and an alloy front tower bar that helps set camber and strengthen the front end. Yellow electronics covers were an optional color set and I liked how it stood out from…

Mini-Z MA-010 RCP Track Perfection

Mini-Z MA-010 RCP Track Perfection

All, Kyosho Mini-Z
Racing this little guy has been both a pleasure and a nightmare given that Delta is a 90mm wheelbase body with high center of gravity on top of my short-steering travel preference (twitchy, as others called this car). The main issue was tire edges catching the track on the outside during a turn and causing a body roll. Even on all narrow wheels, this thing had too much grip up front using Kyosho 20 and 30 degree tires. 40s were too hard to race on, so first solution was finding appropriate tires. I ended up narrowing my choice to Atomic AWD-specific selection in 2nd-3rd degree of softness, but this global solution came with a brand new problem of its own- being part-silicone compound, these tires would not respond nor to…

Overdue Revival – Drift MA-010

Overdue Revival – Drift MA-010

All, Kyosho Mini-Z
So this was an extremely old project that I had to debug and the push was the new photo series of the Mini-Z bodies. I had a spare MR-02 with a 2.4ghz board and had a friend help shorten the wires to put it into a spare MA-010 chassis to have a dedicated, fun drifter and a second AWD car to let friends play with something that won't take too much damage from being knocked around on plastic tires. The problem was as follows: the main board would simply short out randomly and overheat the batteries. Had to have a couple second looks at it and found a few little mishaps- the steering pot was wired backwards, and the battery terminal-to-board wires were a little too close to one another.…
